So you are going to be helping out with the summer crit races and you want
to know what’s involved, well here it is:

Unless you are notified by the Race Commissaire, be there at 6:30am, yes
even if it is raining…. It might be raining at your place, but not in
South Melbourne. Plus if it is only a light shower some racing will
normally occur.
When you arrive, if by car, make sure you park in Boundary St outside
the Council Transfer Station, not of the section where racing occurs.
Head over to the area of the start-finish line where you will find the
Commissaire and Trafficca Traffic Management and the other volunteers
for the day.
First thing is to grab a reflective vest (safety first!!!)
You will be required to help load the traffic cones, signs and barriers
into the Trafficca ute and then assist them with putting all the cones
and signs out on the course.
2 or 3 people will help Trafficca, the others will help the Commissaire
set up the start-finsh and registration areas.
When putting out the cones and signs, there are painted dots on the road
to show you where to put things and the guys from Trafficca will give
you plenty of direction. Always remember that there are other cars on
the road until the course is set up, so you need to keep an eye out for
them.
If there is any obstacles (tree branches, leaves, dirt, glass, etc)
there are brooms in the storage area for this to be swept off the
course. Or to use to get rid of any water that is sitting on the course.
Once all the set-ups is complete, it is normally close to the time for
racing to commence.
While racing is underway, there are a number of activities that the Race
Commissaire may ask you to help out with, these include:
Assisting Trafficca or the Lions Club marshals on a corner of the
course
Assisting cars existing Fowles Auctions
Filling out accident reports if there is a crash
Help managing the racing
Assisting with collecting the race finish results.
At the end of racing, all the equipment needs to be collected and put
away, toilets need to be filled with water and cleaned, and the rubbish
taken around to the transfer station.

This all sounds like a lot, but there is time to grab a coffee and
muffin from Michael at Soul Kitchen.
Make sure you prepare for the weather, as you know Melbourne can have
four seasons in a few hours, so bring something warm to put on and have
comfortable shoes. If your riding down, make sure you bring some other
shoes to put on, we don’t want you to destroy your cycling shoes as
you’ll do plenty of walking.
